Dry Shaving Needn’t Be a Rough Deal

Written by Advice Team on October 27, 2015

They’re super fast, they require minimal cleaning, they don’t need you to whip up a lather and let’s face it, you can do it with your eyes shut; dry electric shavers are the ultimate in easy shaving.

But those in the know recognise that there is a right and a wrong way to use your dry electric shaver. Our experts have put together 5 simple rules that will make your morning shave even easier and quicker. As a bonus you’ll get a much cleaner and closer shave, and your shaver will last much longer.

If you’re new to electric shaving it can take some time to get used to so don’t give up. Not all electric shavers are right for everyone but there are hundreds of different styles and models out there and with bit of research you will find one that’s perfect for you. Trust us - it’s worth persevering.

1. Little and Often Electric shavers work much better the shorter your facial hair, so little and often is the key. Shave every day, even on the weekend. Tempting as it is to have a couple of days off, the longer the hair the more difficult and uncomfortable the shave will be, which doesn’t bode well for Monday morning.

2. Use Sharp Blades This is a pretty obvious one but it’s incredible how many men neglect to change their blades. Using a dull blade will result in a sub-standard shave and is a recipe for razor burn. As a general rule, blades will need replacing every 12-18 months depending on how often you shave and the toughness of your stubble. If you don’t do this you’ll end up pressing harder to get a decent shave - not good for your razor, or your skin.

3. Use a Pre-Prep Product To get the best out of your dry electric shaver ensure that your stubble is clean and bone dry before you start, so choose to shave before your morning shower, not after. Use an alcohol-based pre-electric shave optimiser to remove the natural oils from the area and help create the ideal surface for a smooth, comfortable glide and a close electric shave. If you’re prone to sensitive skin choose a pre-prep product containing vitamin E to protect and rehydrate your skin during the shave.

4. It’s All in the Angle and Motion Electric shavers are designed to be held at right angles to your face to ensure maximum contact of the working area of the shaver with your skin. Shave with the grain of your hair and use your free hand to pull your skin taut to help the hairs stand upright for a cleaner cut. Foil shavers work best using back-and-forth strokes whereas, as the name suggests, rotary shavers should be used in circular motions.

Due to the obvious fact that they are electrical, most electric shavers generate some degree of operational heat. This heat can irritate sensitive skin so move quickly and methodically across the skin so that you don’t go over the same area of skin repeatedly and tackle sensitive areas like the neck first while the shaver is still cool. Remember that every time you go over the surface of your face, the shaver removes a small layer of skin so make as few passes as possible.

5. Finishing Up Once you have completed the shave, rinse your face with clean, cold water and pat (don’t wipe) your face dry with a soft towel. Apply an alcohol and fragrance-free post-shave balm or moisturiser to your face. If you have sensitive skin, choose one containing Aloe to soothe and hydrate your skin.

Like all motorised appliances, shavers perform better if they are properly maintained and any worn out parts are replaced as soon as possible. Not only will it help to deliver a better shave, it will prolong the product life so it’s a win win. Many electric shavers now come with their own cleaning systems so you’ve got no excuse. If not, use the cleaning brush provided to remove any whisker dust from the cutters and foil after each shave. It only takes a second and it will ensure that your shaver is primed and ready to go next time.
